Hey guys

Just wondered where the best place to get some auto fluid from because im gonner change the fluid in a couple a days ? Does halfords sell it? or do i have to buy it from mercedes cos if i remember they only sell it in 1litre bottles which could be expensive? The car is a 2001 w210 e320 c.d.i with the tiptronic box with w and s modes . Main dealers changed it last time so i want to get some fluid that will mix due to the fact i wont get 100% of the old fluid out . Got a nice new shiny dipstick i wanner try out :p

If your car was built before 09 1999 it could have a drain plug for the converter, if not. You can change it all by undoing the oil cooler pipe, and spinning the engine for a few seconds.

The fluids are all here and you will need 7 liters

Your box is the 722.6 box

Are we talking about ATF here? If so, you don't need to change it if it was only done a year ago, even if you've done 50,000 miles. I had mine changed yesterday for the first time in 10 years and with 192,800 miles on the clock.
I wasn't having any problems (a couple of clumpy pick-ups from neutral over the past year or so - nothing else) but I decided to have it done anyway. As mentioned by Malcolm (Television), 7 litres is all you need. I paid £9.95 per litre and the job took 1.5 hours. The invoice included a new Transmission Filter (£8.80) and Gasket (£8.53).

This morning the box was so smooth it was a delight. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't rough before, but the changing down as I stopped at lights etc. was almost imperceptible.

Good luck

I'd buy only from MB, their fluid contains additives that may not be in branded products. I know that the older boxes can use branded fluids, but the 722.6 box and newer need MB products. When you buy, make sure you give the guy on the parts desk your VIN.

I would certainly change it at that mileage regardless of age. You may find it useful to buy a pan magnet as well, this will attract metallic particles from the fluid, reducing wear and also giving you a good idea of how much wear there is at the next change.

You may find the old fluid is as black as diesel engine oil, don't worry as this is normal.

You can buy it on Evilbay for £50 plus post, and its made by Fuchs and has the very latest MB spec on the bottle, in fact im told the bottle is the same as the MB one. You can also buy an original filter and gasket from the same place £12.99.
