Auto gearbox knob removal

How does the gear knob come off on a SClass (W220) auto box? I dropped the little plastic chrome collar but I cant workout how to remove the knob!

Tried twisting and pulling unsuccesfully, is there is a "secret" method that some kind person could tell me?

I have a nice shiny alluminium one I want to replace my rather worn one with!

On all of the ones that I have seen you quarter turn the chrome collar and the knob pulls up and off.

Didnt feel like it wanted to budge, but then I was being a little gentle.

Promise you will not laugh, the last one that I pulled off was hard, I almost knocked my self out when it came off as I hit myself under the chin
