Auto gearbox not engaging

Hi all, I am having an intermittent issue, whereas on start up, I then put car into drive, but it does not engage (or any other gear), if i then turn the engine off and restart, it then engages fine?????

1st check would be fluid level.

Hi, thanks for reply, is it a simple DIY to check level and top up if required?
IO will then book into a garage to have the fluid drained and new filter added etc

I believe yours will be the 7 speed box. Pretty sure that needs to go on star to check the level at 80 degrees running temperature.
When was the last ATF service?
It may well be worth doing a service if your booking in to an Indie anyway.

If it's7 speed get the code read using MB STAR diagnostics before throwing money at it.
It could be anything from low oil to electroplate failure.

Can't remember, does brake switch on pedal prevent shift when faulty or playing up?
