Hi all,
I been looking in these forums for quite a while but never posted till now

About 3 months ago I bought my first Merc a C220 CDI Auto W202 W reg (think its a 2000). its done 210,000miles WOW and the engine is as sweet as a nut. I noticed after doing a longish run in the car like 50miles or so the Gearbox starts to slip noticeably from 2-3rd I think but not sure.

I spoke to a few people about this and they said they cannot change oil as it isn't needed as its lifetime oil? However I read in another thread that this can be changed and a filter can be replaced.

So my question is if I get the oil changed (if possible) will it solve my problem or is the damage already done and should I look for a second hand box at a breakers?

I am still running the car as I only go a few miles to work and this is fine and doesnt slip at all. Also which box will it be if I do need to get a replacement is it the 722.6? it would be a shame to sell the car on as it's mint and I love the car.

Thanks in advance

Hi and Welcome,

You can check you car against the attached with the first 6 digits of your VIN. http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb0.asp?TP=1
You can also see the original spec with your vin on this site http://www.mbclub.ru/mb/vin/index.html?lng=eng

You can undertake a ATF and filter replacement, Parrot of Doom has posted a very helpful thread when he changed the fluid on his W210.
http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=16659

I do not know if this will solve your problem, however I'm sure a few others will come up with some recommendations

I have no listed faults for this, I think though that an oil change would not do any harm as this seems possibly temperture related. Most people are pleased with the result of an oil change.

Given the mileage, slipping on acceleration could be the pressure control spring on the way out or if it's flaring on hard acceleration the bearing on the main clutch basket .
Gummed up old oil normally leads to harsh operation or poor changes however dropping the pan will give you some clues.A large amount of gray sludge would mean the clutch plates are probably worn out or brass/bronze filings a main bearing KO.

just to give you hope , if nothing else . I've personally done fluid and filter changes and it's cured faults such as yours, so it's definitely the first thing to try before getting your wallet out for bigger stuff.
