Hi all. Newbie on here and totally new to Mercs.

I am looking for any technical information on the automatic gearbox that is in my finacees C Class Coupe C200K. We take delivery of it on Monday having test driven it on Sunday. It is a C200K SE 2003 on a 53 plate.

Can anyone help me on some questions I have on the autobox in the wee Merc?

1.) Is it a 5 speed auto?

2.) Does it have a torque converter lock up an any of the forward gears?

3.) Who makes the autobox if not Mercedes, ZF make the one in my Beamer?

4.) Is there a service requirement for the autoboxes? BMW state that their autoboxes are sealed for life! Yeah right! I have had mine serviced by a transmission specialist.

5.) Is there a dipstick under the bonnet for checking the fluid level and filling?

6.) What type of fluid do these autoboxes use? Dexron III etc?

7.) Has anyone changed the fluid and filter on a transmission? I used to change the fluid and filter regularly on my Vauxhall Senator 3.0i 24V beast.

8.) From memory looking at the gear level surround, is it possible to drive the car by manually selecting the gears by moving the gear lever from left to right? I saw little + and - signs next to D. I can manually shift gears in my auto 5 Series by knocking the gear lever back and forth when in sports mode.

9.) There was a button next to the gear lever that had W and S on it. Does this mean W for winter mode (pulling off in 3rd gear say) and S for a Sports mode?

Thanks

Andrew

Do a search for 722.6. They are sealed for life (not). Plenty of info around. Good gearbox though. Fluid is Mercedes only. Tip function will work like your BMW. There is no drain plug on your toque converter which doesn't as far as I am aware have a lock up. Plenty of info on dipsticks (merc special tool, but you can make your own) and fluid and filter change relatively straightforward apart form the torque converter fluid. W mode starts off in 2nd and changes up earlier. Try the other forum too....

gearbox oil and filters should be changed every 40k miles or 4 years, which ever comes first. This is a relatively new policy as they used to be "sealed for life".

Yes they are a 5 speed electronic gearbox. Yes you can change gear by flapping the gearstick left and right (although it will still change automatically when it hits the red-line).

The torque converted does have a lock up on the electric boxes. The 722.6 relates to the gearbox not the car. For the car model use first 3 numbers after the WDB in the VIN. The next 3 numbers after that relate to the specific model within the range given by the first 3 numbers.
I cannot recommend the search function on the forum strongly enough. Everything you are asking has been covered previously.

Just to second the fact that yes, they do have a torque converter lock-up. The box is known as a 722.6, made by MB. The car is known as a 203.7 (203 meaning late C class, 7 means a coupe) Your box in your BMW was probably a 5HP22 made by either ZF or Getrag (not Gartrac as everybody seems to think). BMWs do not make gearboxes or diffs.
