Can anybody please offer any advice..

I have an E220CDi auto tiptronic. I have just started to have a problem with the transmission. When I start up I cannot get the gearstick to move into gear at all for approx 5 mins. Then it it is okay until I either restart or even open and close the door whilst the engine is still running, it gets stuck again... Any ideas what may be causing it,

Many Thanks
Andy

Hmmmmmmm, I have a similar problem in that I occassinally can't select drive. It's happended a few times last week - 2 days in particular where it was happening constantly - basically every time I tryed to select drive (usually after starting the car) it would only get as far as N. I would have to wait a while before it would go into D. During this time I randomly tried different things - shifted gear lever into other gears and then tried again, restart engine etc. Not quite pin-pointed what it is.

It's been OK for the past few days though.

The brake light switch is listed as a fault on the MB data base for this problem

Its only £9 and easy to fit, I cant guarantee the cure but it is the main one listed for your fault.

Thanks for the reponse.

Do you have any more information on this? You say it's listed as the main fault on the MB database - could you post this here and/or could we view this on the database?

Razor, its a switch mounted behind the brake pedal. It stops the gear lever from slipping out of park by accident by ensuring the driver is pressing the brake pedal before putting the car into gear.

I havn't experienced any problems with gear lever slipping out of park.

There are speed data signals on this switch that also operates the brake lights. the leakage in the switch kills the speed signal, so as the car does not know whats happening it locks the lever.

There is a release hole by the gear shift on some cars and you can poke down a wire (in tool kit) to free it.

If you took it to MB they would change the switch as a first thing.
This fault is the same on other cars in the range,it did not help them where liquid had been spilt into the gear shift.''
