Auto Transmission replacement

Can anyone please tell me if auto box 722 415 03 318051 will replace 722 358 03756185, and what is meant by "New Automatic Transmission" [855].
In other words is 722 415 03 318051 a direct replacement for the former 722 358 03756185, OR if any /many modifications are required.

I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure that "No, 722.4s cannot replace 722.3s".

Why? The 722.4 is a weaker box suited to the less powerful cars. A 230E might have a 722.4 but a 300E-24 would have a 722.3 or 722.5 (5-speed based on the 722.3.

I'm sure others will comment.

The reason is, I have acquired a donor car - a 1993 300TD N/A diesel estate; which has a fully functioning Auto box. The plan is the exchange the boxes and the current 722.3 be refurbished and then reinstated (to keep all original). the existing box has lost reverse.

Also the Donor car will be parted out for spares, I have no use for the good Diesel engine and Black (061) interior.

I am sure automatic transmissions are model specific and any numbers after the first 3 or 6 are the trans suited, any other number change with have different ratio's and upset the ecu. I have found too that although the appearances look the same there are subtle differences such as couplings.
By all means try the other transmission it may be fine
