Hi

I want to change the Automatic transmission oil in my 300E W124 series Dec88

Does anyone know exactly what type of oil it needs. Various suppliers say Dextron 11 oil others say Dextron 111 oil and Mercedes garage could/would only quote the part number (helpful lot!)

Is it realy important to keep the car level or can I just jack the front up.

Lastly, since the car has done quite a few miles, I was going to ad some "Lucas Transmission Fix" adative 500mil size. Has anyone used this and if so how is it. It is expensive enough at £12.50 for the 500ml bottle!!!

Regards

the box should be fine on dexron 2 (was Dexron 3 around in 1988?). If there's no problem with the box rather than adding the Lucas additive I'd just change the fluid and filter - make sure you drain the torque convertor though as it has a seperate drain plug

Oh yes and remember to put the drain plug back in the TC!
left mine overnight to drain, put the transmission one back in but forgot the torque convertor

ATF all over the floor

Hi

Thanks for your reply andy_k and mercmonkey.

Good point about the TC drain plug!!!

No, Dextron 111 wasn't around in those days.

Do you happen to know if it is esential to keep the car level or can I just jack up the front?

Regards :D

Im not sure this is the correct way but this is how i did mine...

Raise car and remove drain plugs
lower car and leave to drain (left mine overnight)
raise car change filters etc
refit drain plugs (BOTH OF THEM)
lower car
measure out correct quantity of fluid (used haynes manual) and fill up
start car hold down footbrake and go through each gear setting holdin it in each setting for a few seconds
drive car for a few miles
put in park on level ground
with engine still running check fluid level and top up if needed

As I said Im not sure if this is the correct way and Im open to comments

Hope this helps

as stated
What I've yet to have explained to me or have found in any Manual, is how to work out what is needed to top up an auto box. Difficult enough getting it down that tube, but what quantity say, the level is quarter of an inch below?? Warning if you overfill is fine but wheres the info to help NOT overfill??
May be simpler in more modern cars or perhaps they are like Batteries, sealed for life?

In the haynes manual (190E 2.0 Auto) it says on page 1A.2 6.6 litres, 2.3&2.6 models 7.1 litres
