Hi,

Not sure which thread this should be in but....

I like to use Rainex on my screen but it does confuse the auto wipers.

Can somebody tell me where the sensor is so that I can just miss that bit of the screen.

It's in the top of the screen behind the rear view mirror - newspaper and vinegar cleans it up nicely

I have had the same issue after getting my w203 car washed at a hand car wash. The sensor is behind the rear-view-mirror however I have failed to get my sensor working again after trying to clean the glass where the sensor is with many different products. I have been advised to polish it with fine steel wool however I have not had the guts to try that yet!

May give the vinegar trick a go, I have already tried rubbing alcohol but my next attempt was going to be acetone....

Don’t put RainX on your windscreen. It will bugger up the rain light sensor and also change the coefficient of friction that your wiper blades are designed for; you could end up with the worst ever squeaking noise. And plus it’s a pig to remove.

Side and rear glass however is another story…

You need the 0000 grade wire wool. Don’t be shy about it, the glass is harder than the steel so as long as you don’t scrub too hard, and change the hank of wool you’re using at regular intervals you won’t cause scratching.

if you get a replacement screen the genuine one has a code for the colour, tint, spec and that is supposed to be checked to match the cars coding.

My insurer wouldn't fit merc OEM, but the fitting centre needed the car "to do indoors and calibrate the ADAS stuff"... the auto wipers were rubbish afterwards… at crimbo trying to resolve a fitting error by an indy garage on an electrical module (that I didn't know they had done wrong), I had both SAMs SCN'd to Std coding and the auto wipers are much closer to where they were before the new screen - AKA bearable but a bit naff - instead of plain useless

Literally just going through this right now ... Turns out the sensor needs replacing as it's not 'stuck down' properly on the new windscreen. Shame you can't just replace the gel between sensor and screen ...

W.R.T this forum, I just use AutoGlymm Fast Glass and it's great to keep the screen cleaaaaaaan

on a merc there's a lot of stuff on the screen that is part of the sensors operation....they have (can't think of the right words...) a light diffraction matrix that comes with a screen

on a ford its a hole in the black surround and a 10p clip for the sensor to fit.

On a side point I have just put new Mercedes wipers on and the clean is really good. Pity I have the magic wash so only available from Mercedes at £94 a pair.

I am dismantling the old ones to try and fit replacement rubbers for when these wear out.
