Have a look at the top of the windscreen from the outside.
If it has auto wipers you'll see the rain sensor just infront of the rear view mirror mounting. Depending on the car it's either a blue or a red oblong patch. You can see the LED and the sensor itself if you look closely enough.
Switch the wipers to setting 1 (intermittant or auto-wipe) and, with the engine running, use a hosepipe to simulate rain over the top centre of the windscreen. Alternatively, you could move to Manchester and enjoy the real thing.

As Doug says, switch to setting I, older auto wipers will give a single wipe even in the dry, newer versions will not wipe. Spray the area of the screen where the sensor(s) sit, the wipers should spring to life.
