The feature that allows me to close the windows and sunroof on my 1996 C180 (W202) by holding the key button for more than two seconds has stopped working recently. Can anyone offer a diagnosis and suggest a cure, please?

Does it still work by using the key in the driver's door and holding the key turned until the windows and sunroof have closed automatically? (Rather than the fob?)

Had one of these problems only yesterday and the basic key reset did the job, ie put the key in the ign swich and open/close the ign and then remove the key and close the door, put the key in the door lock and turn to lock position and hold for at least 30 secs and then turn to unlock and hold for 30 secs. The windows should now open and the sun roof, turn to lock and hold the windows will close and now your remote should work normally. Try it and see.

Gentlemen, thank you for your comments. Unfortunately, I do not have a key lock in the driver's door - only the passenger door! The Driver's door has a red and green LED where the key hole would normally be which flash when the car is locked/unlocked with the remote key button. The passenger door key hole only operates that door and is intended for use only to retrieve a spare key battery from the vehicle... whilst the alarm screams at you... rather loudly!!

Any other thoughts, please?

I got the message, and have you tried changing the batteries in the key?

Yes, eric242340, the key is a recent [expensive] replacement... the other one went totally u/s on me a couple of months ago. The problem is also there with my Wife's key as well!

are the red/green led's flashing correctly ? ie: flash red only when closing and green only when opening ?

if not, then you have a problem which could be

key fob batteries need replacing (even if relatively new) or the car battery needs replacing, or you need to re-sync the key.

now, i must say THANK YOU to aclem for this post as I've had my C220 for two years and was NEVER aware of this feature,

needless to say I ran outside and tried it and low and behold, the windows and sunroof close ! mighty nice thanks :)

ps. if you break your key again (and to learn how to re-sync it) read this

You're welcome, anyweb, and if you really want to be amazed try pressing and holding when the car's locked... all the windows and sunroof will open... now there's clever! Useful on a hot day when the car's been in the sun all day. Many thanks for the link to repair the broken key.

Anyway, the LEDs on my car are flashing correctly and the car battery is only a few months old and behaving fine... the car also has a new alternator and OVP relay! I've re-synced the key as well, all to no avail. Tricky one, this, although at least its only a 'nice to have' function and not a major problem.

Many thanks for all your thoughts.

So what happens ?

Your windows and sunroof are open and your car is unlocked. You go to centrally lock your doors and close windows and sunroof - what happens ?

Does the central locking work ? but leave the windows and sunroof open ?

change the batteries in the key fob ANYWAY, its worth it for a test (then resync the key)

I tried pressing the button on mine when car was locked and it didnt do anything, should I be doing anything else ?

just checked again,

if i hold the button in for a few seconds and the windows+sunroof=open, then it closes all three of them

if they are all closed and i press the button for a few seconds then it only opens the two front windows

is that normal ?

Yes, the car locks as normal but the windows and s/roof do not move.

ok then, lets imagine that your windows are open

you press and hold the key fob button, you say nothing happens, can you try doing this inside the car while pointing the key fob at the rear view mirror

does it work ?

did you change the fob batteries yet ?

Would not the re set work on this, by holding the roof closed for 10 sec in key 2, the same for the windows, I will try and check over the weekend

Hi,
My total closure sometimes don,t work but replacing the fob batteries has never made any difference try disconnecting/reconnecting of the car battery as this has cured it for me.
