Hello All

Please has anyone here carried out their own Automatic Fluid change on a 250 GLE 4Matic 9 Speed transmission (mine is a 2016 model)? If so, please could there share any tips and advice. In particular do I need any special tooling and/or a Professional Diagnostic Scanner in order to re-set any codes within the on-board computer system.

Most grateful for your tips.

Martin

Hello Nameless! No, but I have done it on my 7g and the principles are broadly the same except taking the temp, which on a 9G is done on the scanner. You will need a professional scanner (icarsoft mb v2 or 3 is the norm for home mechanics). You will also need an oil fluid pump kit of at least 10 litres (complete with MB adapters) to pump fresh oil into the transmission, a transmission service kit, a good Socket Set, Torque Wrench and corner lifters/chocks. Plus, LOTS of disposable latex gloves (long ones that cover above the wrist) and plenty of lint free disposable cleaning material to clean the environment and sealing surfaces. My oil pump is made by Vorlux and is very good. I would suggest getting the service kit from MB Grangemouth as it will come with all the right bits. Also a large bowl to drain the old oil into of at least 11 litres. There should not be any codes to reset after a fluid change. Also drain the Torque Converter and oil cooler pipes if you can. Many good guides available and the thing with this job is don't be daunted, it looks difficult but with the right equipment and environment it is very straightforward.
Although on a 2016 model GLE, you may wish for the dealer or a good independent to do it for you so it is on the Service History. On a 4matic you may need to remove the transmission mount to remove the oil pan which I have read about before so check this before you start.
The key is to read up any good guides and advice and familiarise yourself and prepare for the job, before you do it.

I got a local Indie to do the fluid change on my 14 plate ML. I considered the £315 worth paying vs getting under it and getting dirty ... & I got a headed receipt for my records.
I have done ATF changes in the past on cars but that was on a car with a fill/level plug & one that wasn't 2.2 tonnes.

Smart + others :)
On a 9g you need a tool to turn the fill/drain valve to the relevant position. You also fill thru this tool. The sump and filters come as one.

Me -2019 GLC 350 coupe AMG line. Mrs- 1.2 vauxhall Corsa 2021 ,orange with a black roof. .
9g cost me £390. I seriously couldn't be bothered to chew on. Mess it up then have to pay for it to put right. Up on a 4 poster is another story.

Idiots did nuthin in way of making that job easier, or less time consuming eh! All needed was qty refill at ambient and allowing for tc oil drain or not. The expansion of lube fluid is a known qty. Not rocket science..
Simply put near all my kit here has a hot idle mark and cold level mark worked great for 40 + yrs.

Thanks Harry, great reply with lots of detail. Since posting I have contacted 2 local Independents but despite promising to get back to me with a price, they have not yet. I will do a price search on the items you recommend (especially the Professional Scanner as I have been thinking about one of those for a wee whilst now) and make a decision. Thanks again.

Thank you Star. Please do you have either a Part Number for this tool or perhaps an Internet Link? Thank you.

My pleasure. consider also purchase cost of the various tools and Materials. As some say above it may just be easier to book in for piece of mind. The tools I bought of course now own so future fluid changes are limited to fluids and service kit costs only, plus my own time. The Icarsoft is an invaluable piece of kit for many jobs. You will find yourself plugging it in for no other reason than you can :) !
