Automatic gearbox problems

I have a sprinter (PJ64DHZ for exact model) its starts no problems however there automatic box light does not come on and therefore I cannot place it into drive. Mmm nae good.

The light was flickering the other day and some times refusing to go into drive then the following day it worked without fail and the light stayed oil constantly.

This morning it doesn't want to play at all as the light stays out !

I wondered if this was a common problem or anyone has experienced the problem before.
My initial thoughts are it could be dampness...

When you say dampness, has it been through floods recently? I'm not sure of your model designation, but is yours the Sprintshift box or torque converter auto?
Either way, I think your best bet is to have its codes read with Star.
