I'm looking for some guidance on how I can identify if my 2013 C220 CDI W204 has a sealed auto box or if it requires Servicing. My car system tells that it requires A) service shortly and part of that is ATF and Filter change but when I asked another Mercedes owner he said it was a sealed system?

Grateful for any advice.

They all need servicing my view is <50k miles. My car has a 9 speed box presently on 42k miles and it will be done before 50k. My last car a 7 speed S212 had two transmission services in 80k miles and the box was as smooth as silk

Seem to remember I had the same issue with my W204, so I took it to an=n indie who drained the ATF (partial change) and then a month later changed the ATF again. Not very satisfactory but better than nothing.

2013 is a facelift W204, which IIRC the owners manual specifies 1 transmission service (fluid and filter) at 37.5k miles and after that - nothing! Although my car is pre facelift that's what the handbook says, I had a big discussion with the service manager (MB main dealer) when buying the car as the service records did not show it as having been done, said service manager was adamant that pre facelift is "sealed for life" and only facelift needs service at 37.5k. miles. My indie said I did not need it done until close to 100k miles - which is what I did, autobox and TC plus filter.

Sealed system = sealed for death (or to get the car out of warranty period )
As above posts , they all get serviced now .

Nothing is sealed for life! How do they get it in there. They must think every consumer is a dumbass.

My mum used to have a VW Vento (mk3 golf with a boot). There was no drain plug etc for the gearbox so I used to remove the pan, clean it, fill with fresh fluid and job done. Every VW service place said they can’t supply me oil as it’s sealed for life….

There is no such thing as a sealed system. It is sealed from the service schedule.
Do it every 35k end of.
It has a filter, oil, an oil pan.

Use yer loaf lad.

Mine is booked in for next Tuesday 16th.
Only had the car 6 weeks and 100k on it so i got it on the to-do list but that was the earliest date i could get.
No idea if it has ever been done before.

If using red oil maybe. Not the good stuff . It's designed to last longer .

Speak with one of the recommended Indies and take their advice. I usually have my older S203 gearbox serviced by Cole at MBS. Pan off thoroughly washed inc magnet. New filter pan gasket and fresh fluid.

The garage will be able to tell you based on condition of old oil (colour, smell).
It is always a nice difference with new fluids, regardless of which.

^^^ This . How can old fluid possibly be better than lovely new clean stuff ? Same goes for the filter .
Sealed for life fans should take a look inside an oil pan for themselves when it comes off .

Friction material from the clutch plates resides in the old oil , some say oil changes too frequently washes it all out and older gearboxes start to slip. It's written somewhere if you research it , but it usually ends up being a slagging match on here. :)

Speaking of Diff's I had a 2004 S Type Jag and that only had a filler plug so I used to suck the old oil out with a syringe and refill. Jaguar also say the gearbox is sealed for life, I had mine changed twice over the eleven years of ownership by an Independent garage.
