As a new user I've just bought a brand new B180 CDI SE and was somewhat disappointed to find that after 500 miles it developed an interesting (painful actually) knocking sound when I pulled away. The best way I can descrive it is like someone tapping gently on a wooden door twice. After the initial move off from standing you'd not hear the noise again unless you braked particularly hard. As soon as you pulled away again it would be back.
The noise only appears once the engine had begun to warm up and to be coming from the driver's door.
My local MB dealer in Tonbridge, Kent had the car back and after 4 days of testing located the problem to be a hydraulic pipe in the engine bay. The pipe was flexing against part of the chassis and the noise was travelling along a rail underneath the car and into the passenger cabin.
They were sufficiently intrigued that they took a couple of their B class courtesy cars for drives and found the same problem. By making a 'modification' to the pipe themselves they have cured the problem.
As the model of car is quite new I couldn't locate anyone else having a similar problem on the web. For it to be in three cars all the same model it occurs to be that they may be a fundamental manufacturing flaw?
Anyway if your B Class is making an interesting "knock knock" sound when you pull away after the engine has warmed up this may be a solution for you. Get your dealer to speak with mine and it may save you a 4 day wait for yours to be fixed!

PS does anyone know if the reflectors in the doors of the B Class should illuminate when the doors are open? On the A Class I was given to borrow they did but there is nothing in the instruction book for my B180?
