140's have the 722 5 speed box, if you drive at 62 MPH on light throtle and take the gear shft back one, a change in the RPM should be seen.
you can check it out here, certainly from 97 on

I am drawing a blank on this one, first time ever the gearbox does not come up

The car is also known as a 300SEL 3.2, yours is model code 17s 320L the engine is a104.990, it could be 772/2-3-4-5-6.

What year is the car ?

If the numbers on the gear quadrant go up to 3 it's a four speed box.

Hardly rocket science to work that out.The 5 speed was a cost option
on the early W140 six cylinder.

I can't see it being economic to fit a 5 speeder.Best to sell and buy the spec you want.
The 722.5 W 5 A 030 box is hydraulic with overdrive and should fit.

The later 722.6 W 5 A 330 is electronic and would not. (note some of the later versions of your car appear to be fitted with this box)

It's the number after the W that tells you whether the box is 4 or 5 speed.
So for example your current box appears to be the:

722.3 W 4 A 040

Phew...
