I have a 2001 C class Merc diesel which has just started producing a strange smell. I have replaced the pollen filter and this has not cured it. It is a mild exhaust type smell which is quite nauseous after a while, I have to turn on air recycle to get rid of it, it is worse when you stop and you can smell it when you get out of the car also does anyone have any ideas what it is and no it's not me!

The reason I say that is because the injectors can leak past the seals at the botton and give a combustion smell inside the cabin.

Has anyone come across this particular smell?....
Vehicle: 2006 C220 CDi Avantgarde Estate.
Get in the car, close the door, no smell.
Start engine with Auto & Aircon switched off and you get an awful pong right away.
Put the Aircon on however, it goes away in seconds (and never appears if you leave aircon on anyway)
What is the smell? Well... certainly not eggy... not to be too impolite, it 's just like a well used and seldom cleaned men's urinal! OR a shop doorway in the morning after the pubs turn out.
The obvious answer is leave the Aircon on all the time I realise ;-)
But it kinda proves the chilled air is NOT the cause, it's the cure.

Anyone else had this problem? Car is still under warranty until May 2009 BTW.
Only owned it a week or so, the interior (full leather) and carpets seem very clean. Doubt it's actually what it smells like, you'd notice that all the time you'd expect!

Malcolm is right, we used it at vauxhall.
Fortron is a good product, get two cans, Turn on the engine, put the air con on recurculation full power, and crack both canisters open in either footwell, leave it for 30 minutes with all doors and windows shut. Its an antibacterial cleaner that gets inside the system and kills the bacteria that makes it stink.
