We have had an intermittent bad egg smell in two W211 E Class cars over the last 6 months and having searched here and suspected both stinky air con and smelly cat/converters it turned out to be something much simpler and cheaper, the washer fluid was stagnant and as the filler to the bottle is beside the air con intake it was getting into the cabins. Emptied them out, put in some disinfectant, topped up and the problem has gone, if you have a smelly W211 this could be your problem.

Have you been suffering with this smell issure during the cold weather or just on warm days. MB checked my car for this problem last summer, on my compliant of air con smelling, which only occurs on warm/hot days, said they found nothing. Am intrested to weather you have nailed the problem?

I had a similar problem with the ML when I bought it - a 'bad egg' smell when the aircon was switched on. :(

I bought an aerosol (New Comma Air Con Cleaner) which, when set off with the recirc and aircon on, cured the problem 100%.

Hope this helps.

smelly air con

in our climate you will get some condensation/ moisture in the air ducting on the cabin side of the system and it will grow mould! that can give the smell! , you may have to park up with the doors open! but if you go to extreme heat and fan on the controls all outlets open and hold it for 5 minutes to dry the system out and then extreme cold to kill of the bacteria it does cure it. all the best!

Check the battery. A messed up battery can cause a egg type smell.
I have come accross this before.

Has anyone come across this particular smell?....
Vehicle: 2006 C220 CDi Avantgarde Estate.
Get in the car, close the door, no smell.
Start engine with Auto & Aircon switched off and you get an awful pong right away.
Put the Aircon on however, it goes away in seconds (and never appears if you leave aircon on anyway)
What is the smell? Well... not to be too impolite, it 's just like a well used and seldom cleaned men's urinal! OR a shop doorway in the morning after the pubs turn out.##The obvious answer is leave the Aircon on all the time I realise ;-)
But it kinda proves the chilled air is NOT the cause, it's the cure.

Anyone else had this problem? Car is still under warranty until May BTW.
