Hi,
i have just been told by MB sweden that my front ball joints need replacing. They have said it will cost approx £330.00 per side .My steering wheel is noisy when turning at slow speeds and the drivers side(lhd) front of the car makes a squeaky noise also when going over bumps.
Can anyone offer any advice?
Is this something i can do myself?
Is it a fairly straight forward job that i can take to a good Independent?
PLEASE HELP an English man in A very cold Stockholm!!!

Cheers Beres

I'd take it to an independent; what's the point in paying MB labour charges at £75 per hour ?

Solved

New ball joints on either side solved the problem.
It cost me around £250 with an MB independent.

Just incase someone was interested in the outcome!
Cheers

Ball joints squeaky

Hi,

My car has just started making spqueaky noises when going over speed humps even though i drive at 5 mph over them, also i get a squeaking from the nearside wheel when turning right? Is this going to be a ball joint replacement?? also i changed my tie rod ends last year will i need to replace these aswell?

Quick question just been reading some post about ball joint replacement and SPRINGS would i need to take the spring out or go anywhere near it when changing the ball joint because i dont want a spring impaling me!!!! my mate told me how he was changing a front spring on his CE and he was using 2 sets of clamps and the spring still flew out and bounced off the floor and straight into his garage wall!!! I have lowering springs installed so does this mean they should be easier to take out as they are shorter (the car is 100mm lower than standard)

I put mine into a garage with the same symptoms and they couldn't detect the problem. Week later out on the road the lower balljoint snapped with catastrophic consequences. One garage wouldn't even do the work-said it was too much for them. The price you've been quoted is maybe a bit high but not outrageous!!

Bearing in mind the ball joints are £13 each* and labour is about £70 / side it seems a tad expensive to me...

* Some cars do have unremoveable balljoints and need a complete wishbone replacement

I've decided to get the wishbone replaced instead of fiddling around with the ball joint, i'll be doing this on the weekend and i will take pics and make notes on what i did and post it up here :p
