Plans to ban cars older than 10 years from our roads

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Banning/restricting cars over 10yrs old. This is on the .gov website too.

"Several EU proposals across the years are dangerous to the classic car movement. One that has been under consideration is to ban the use of cars older than 10 years. Similarly, Edinburgh City Council is considering the banning of cars over 15 years old from the town centre. These, and similar, proposals directly threaten the classic car movement, and encourage the manufacture of new cars, with the attendent environmental issues of sourcing raw materials, manufacturing, distriuting and scrapping the spiralling supply of new vehicles."

You'll be banned from using the roads and only allowed to take the vehicle out having obtained PRIOR consent from your local council.. I.e youd have to plan your route in advance and inform the council for approval who may then decline the whole thing or certain aspects like perhaps if you wish to pass through a city centre etc...

How blumin stupid are these people that come up with these ideas.

I can see a 1 day event on the cards, all 10 ++ years old cars on the road all at the same time in set locations to cause maximum disruption.

Its a silly scheme run by some imbecile on Stuttgart council. Edinburgh are looking at it (apparently they have a reputation for being a bit dumb too) but don't have any actual plans to introduce it as yet, and that's about as far as this hair brained stupidity has got or is likely to get.
The Govt attitude is already clear with exemptions from the new higher tax bands for older cars so I don't see the point of petitioning Blair about it.
I wouldn't worry too much about it.

We had the same scare 35 years ago with the EU and a ban on vintage cars that would need a permit to take out onto the road.

In a way its making a mockery of the MOT, the same one that applies to 3 year old cars

Pretty sure I got something similar to this in a "scare" Email months ago.
It will be all based on some Euro MP trying to make a name for him/herself by making a pointless proposal, knowing that they will get a reaction.

What with the amount of people who have older or classic cars, the response would be catastrophic for the imbecile that trys to bring in this draconium law and for the classic car industy, so I would treat this with the contempt that it deserves.

Nice to know these Eurocrats aren't wasting taxpayers money...!!!

Bring it on!

I Fooking dare them!

Like it, it cant be done. Second hand car dealers would go out of business, independent garages would go, car parts suppliers and shops would close. cars 6 years old would be worthless.
This would be an economical disaster for the conservative government.

And well over half the local councils buses would have to be scrapped too!
This is typical dimwitted political thinking, but, I`d go for it if the government were to subsidise me by 90% and pay me for disposing of my 10 year old W202.

I'd better sell my 10 year old W202 NOW then, before word gets about.

Seriously though, That's a ridiculous idea. Who's going to spend money maintaining a 7-8 year old car when it has to be scrapped at 10 years. Surely that proposal will lead to more unroadworthy cars less than 10 years being on the roads. If they want to improve the safety of the roads then they should increase the standards of the MOT so that older cars are better maintained.

And what about MB's 30 year anti-corrosion warranty!

Re your comments on the MOT, the talks are still going on for a every 2 year MOT

Daft as it may sound, some countries are already employing disguised versions of this law.

In Japan, they make it expensive and difficult for cars over 3 years old to get the MOT equivalent. In Germany, they give you very good tax breaks to buy new.

Look deeper and you will probably see some politicians hand in a motor giants back pocket!

I've heard of this same crazy law being considered in Italy, or perhaps it was even to be EU wide. So it may be more serious than we think. I really hope it won't work but, with the auto manufacturers facing a constantly shrinking market, nothing would surprise me.

In Italy there are already laws in a few cities that forbid cars which are non 'Euro 4' (an emission standard used throughout Europe and strangely not in the UK) from entering the city center.

In the 90's the catalyzer came out and all of a sudden cars without it were the big polluters. Now new 'studies' reveal that catalyzers may actually pollute more, so lets brace ourselves for the next big change in a few years from now which will mean once again we are all heavily encouraged (ie: forced) to change our cars.

Sounds like Edinburgh council are looking at ways of wasting more council tax funds. Glad I live on the west coast! The tax payer will always suffer at the hands of little men with too much power!

This could be the reason why so many Swedes import from Germany

I also got an Email awhile back warning me that "Bird Flu" has killed 300 people in the UK in 2006 and the governement is covering it up:p

Plus one that said I wont be able to smoke in public soon:roll: (Starting to get worried about this one:rolleyes: )
