I bought a mint FSH 2000 W SLK 200k in Jan for a truely unbelievable price. I acted quickly and snapped it up.

One owner, who had just bought a new one!

Mercs and Renaults are quality cars - never buy a VW or BMW....

This will put the cat amongst the pigeons a bit no doubt...

I have a CLS55 and a top of the range Grande Espace (2004).

In some respects (not all!), the Renault feels a higher quality car... mainly things like the quality of door trims.

Most people that slate French cars would be surprised I think if they took a look inside a high-spec Renault these days - very well finished cars.

List on the Renault would have been around £35K when new, so it should be good - but this is still only 50% of what the CLS cost!

Please note - this post is a pro-Renault post, not an anti M-B one!!

Cheers

Jerry

Renaults are better than VW group cars - compare the K4m engine against a similar VW/Peugeot unit and the opposition is old and crap.

Another hyped up car is the 'BMW' MINI. I was developed by Rover, with a Rover 200 floor pan, Rover 200 BRM parts bin and shortened Rover 75 rear suspension - how is that a BMW??? Badge snobs??

MINI has no ride comfort - was going to buy a convertible until i drove one! worse than an old XR3i convertible for comfort and shakes.

It also has a Tritec engine - which isnt BMW! the newer ones have a 20+ year old Peugeot unit which can be traced back to the old 205/309!!

Go-Kart handling?? never?? Go-karts are RWD - MINI FWD

I didn't know that re the origins of the BMW but I am not surprised.

Proper BMWs are RWD and tbh its a travesty that FWD exists, its an economy of design to make packaging easier, not make cars better to drive and handle better.

I'd therefore have a BMW over a renaut product to get that drive train advantage. BMW's e90 3 series was voted britains most reliable car by fleet users

Have a peek

I dont agree with what you say about FWD cars being an ECONOMY OF DESIGN most if not all FWD cars have a much more complex design than the 100 year old RWD system, A Toyota Yaris has nearly as much space inside & far more places for odds & ends than the great boat you & I drive yes we have a bigger boot but open the bonnet up & there space for another engine I am not knocking the w211 I am just saying FWD cars are often a design master piece compaired with the old RWD system

Just take the Citroen CX safaris and the Palas the room inside was fantastic, a 3 meter long worktop would fit inside the car (it would not in a transit) they drove as one of the most comfortable cars ever built, and they would pull themselves through any snow.

A master piece of engineering

They are an economy of design to me as its about making packaging more efficient, not making the car more fun or better to drive. Name one car thats designed to be good to drive thats FWD that isn't derived from a more humble origin.

I can name plenty that aren't. Porsche 911, MB SL, BMW M3 (any proper BMW really), Holden Monaro, Lotus Elise....

wait a minute, renault??We've recently started working on all sorts at work including renaults(because the renault garage opposite went bust),and i've come to learn why people have doubts over them. The biggest shock i've had is the number of suspension springs that brake and even more worrying is that renaults fix is to replace the strut with one with a big cup on the botton to catch the spring WHEN it breaks. Not to modify the spring?Ridiculous.

Oh dear renaults are quality cars??? I wouldnt touch a french car with a barge pole.
on the slk im glad you got a minted one. are you sure you havnt any rust?? as they came supplied with rust at the factory as most mercs of the period. my girfriend had a 2001 slk that had the mandatory rust around the rear boot release so if youve got a non rust model youve won a watch.
