Hi.

I am in the very early satges of MB ownership, having just got a 1998 C180 auto estate.

Funny thing happened today.

While braking for a set of traffic lights the brake pedal felt as if the ABS was cutting in - this was just about at a stop.

This happened a couple of times on the journey.

I then noticed the BAS/ASR and ABS warning lights on.

I have read about the brake light switch giving problems, and I've bought one to fit (whenever it stops raining/snowing!)

I'm wondering if this sounds more likely to be a sensor?

If so, is it an easy job to clean/check the sensor(s)?

I understand the car may store fault codes, if it stores a brake fault will it just clear on self test or will I have to go through a clearing procedure?

Thanks

Don't worry it is always the switch. Don't worry about any codes, do not effect the car and can be erased anytime.

Thanks for the reassurance.

I managed to get the switch changed this afternoon in between the showers.

Not a difficult job, although it would have helped if Euro Carparts had given me the right switch in the first place.

However, they're not too far away and it was swapped for the correct one with no fuss.

A quick spin around the block showed no problems, but I'll wait to see what happens over the next few days before getting too cocky.

Thanks again.

Ok, had it out for a few miles tonight with less than satisfactory results.

All seemed ok until about 3 or 4 miles into the journey, and then the pedal felt as if the abs was being triggered at very slow (almost stopped) speeds.

After a couple of episodes like that the warning lights came on again.

After leaving the car parked at the shops for half an hour or so, the lights were not present on startup and it behaved all the way home (2 or 3 miles).

Could I still be looking at sensor problems??

202 abs

hi

You have a speed sensor fault get fault codes and procede from there, its probably a front sensor fault as the cabel gets a lot more stick

Thanks for the reply.

I changed all the disks and pads last week, and cleaned the abs rings/sensors as best I could.

So far no recurrence of the problem, although I haven't covered many miles.

How do I go about recovering the fault code?

You will need to hook the car up to a fault reading machine, if you have a local independent MB take it there usually around £40 and around £90 at dealer they will plug into a star computer and that will read out the faults on the car and give you a diagnostics
