My dad has a C200 estate 1999, (don't know the W number)His BAS light is permanetly on and the local indie reckons he needs to change the brake ECU.
Is this linked to the ABS, he wants to know if it will pass the MOT later this month. The car is 200+ miles away and I don't know if the ABS has a separate warning light or not
any views ? I reckon he should pay up and get the ECU replaced, but he is relunctant to spend cash on it

Hello sirs, i recently posted a help notice regarding the BAS light on my C180 1998 on permantley.. 1, i changed the brake light switch, 2, i changed the travel sender unit...NO LUCK.. (i even considered having the bulb removed.)

The car has been passing mot for 2 years now with just BAS

Than i took the car down to a local garage, the proprieter kindly linked her up to his hand held machine for £30 and told the fault was the BAS Control Module (a little black box which hangs on the brake servo)
The silly man estimated the price to be in the region of £750-£1000 to supply and fit this part.

After some research i found the location of controle module.. i used a search engine on google and found a similar used part at Dronsfield Mercedes for only £50 inc vat & p&p. i assume the part new from MB would be in the region of £100- £150

i put the part on by myself 5mins and hey presto NO MORE BAS !!!!:D

Have alook on this site it explains the whole BAS technology in detail

Good luck

This unit is also prone to water sitting in one of the 3 plug connectors & causing a short or corrosion. Have a look first - it won't cost anything. As Abul says, under the brake servo, about 5" x 4".

yes, you are right TYPE49 mine had a corroded chip inside on the electric board... Plus you gotta have small hands (like mine) to get to the box without taking anything out i,m afraid...

Also i tested mine with a mates Controle module which i borrowed from his car before i orderd one ??

Now the corner of my inst panel seems really dark ( i think i am starting to miss the flippin BAS light , it was there for a long time) LoL........

The BAS control module is only on a few 202's and then it was incorporated into the esp control unit. They also suffer with water ingress too.
