The higher the rpms the brighter my battery charge light gets on my '85 500sec. I checked the actual battery voltage and it was going up with rpms (well over 13v). Is this normal?

Usually a sign your regulator in your alternator is dodgy. I don't really know the proceedure to give it a proper check i.e. voltage levels to expect etc. It may be worth taking it to a larger Halfords or similar to see if they can test it and give you a diagnostic. I found they do this free of charge. Nothing to lose.

Probably a failed diode in the alternator, this can be repaired but maybe cheaper to buy a recon' unit. the voltage at the battery with the engine running should be approx 13 to 14.5 volts (depending on the 'charged' state of the battery).

Does the battery light come on with the Ignition turned on, if so it is your alternator at fault.
If it doesn?t it is most likely to be a fuse have seen this happen in Ford cars.
Hope this helps.

Thanks all for the replys. Battery wouldn't start the car tonight so now I get to figure out the problem in earnest. Will start with the alternator check. Really strange because like I said, everytime I tested by reving the voltage went over 14v.

dodgy battery light

You might usefully get the battery checked to ensure that it is holding its charge.

the red battery light is the give away here ( worn brushes ) in the alternator battery not getting a charge, when the carbon brushes wear down too much the brush fails to make contact with the armeture and thats what makes the light come on, worst case is they stick to it and when you remove the keys the battery warning light stays on and battery soon runs flat (( alternator brushes )) the regulator and brushes are one unit
