It seems my SLK (1999 V-plate) may need a new battery.

Should I go to my local MB dealer and get one or just head to my nearest Halfords/Kwik Fit? Does it make any difference where I get a battery from?

The battery has run flat twice lately. It may be partly my fault as I'm hardly out in my car at the moment and when I do use it, it's short journeys. The guy who came to get my car going yesterday said he checked the alternator and it's fine.

BK

PS anyone who remembers me from a couple of months ago, re child seat for SLK... I gave in in the end and bought one. I had a little girl in September who LOVES going out in the SLK :D ....well apart from my singing that is 8)

Get a Bosch from wherever. You may be surprised by the dealers price, every now and again they come in quite cheap, especially if they have stock to clear. Personally I'd find the grottiest backstreet parts shop ! Its the same item wherever you get it from. Just make sure that its a decent make and has the at least same AH rating as the existing one.

The MB batteries are supplied by Varta and are equivalent in quality to the Varta "Blue" range (there is also a "Silver" range which is a bit better). It should cost around £55 from most Varta stockists.

However, as jberks mentioned, delears are not too bad on battery prices, and this would probably be my recommendation as you also get a 2-year warranty.

Do not go for an old battery as they have a finite life, once filled with acid. Some larger suppliers will provide a new battery and fill it with acid just as you buy it (but this is mostly for batteries that are not sealed).

(Don't go for Halfords or Kwikfit, they are not any better nor any cheaper.)

Not sure if you got your battery yet but when I went to Halfords they refused to do it - said it's too specialist???

Anyway - main dealer cost me £100 ish... so not bad really.
