I still have this rough running 98 C180, today ive noticed the battery light glowing faintly on the dash, I assume the alternator is on its way out.

Would a failing alternator cause lots of weird electrical problems to occur, things like throttle response issues etc, also the dash lights have a mind of thier own.

It will cause all sorts of electrical issues. Get a meter and have a look at the voltage output.

A faint glow will be one of the diode S/C in the reg pack on the rear, they only cost between £9-18 from any bosch agent, 2 screws hold it on

thought it might be the diode pack but if im going to the trouble I may aswell replace the alt with another rather than rebuild it and find I still have a problem, there again I could buy another second hand and find I still have an issue.
Should imagine the battery is the next thing to go.

95% of alternator faults are the diode pack
