Arrgghh! had problems with my 190 diesel the other day now the 190 2.0 Petrol is on the blink (just tearing out my hair!), Anyway's.....now whilst driving today the ABS light came on, shortly after the rev counter was moving quite frantically (but engine wasn't revving) then everything came to a halt, and was not starting , battery was very flat. Ive checked the tension on the alternator belt but that seems fine. Has the alternator snuffed it?

Left it for about 10 mins, had enough power to start again, got about 500 yrds up the road, then the same thing happened again, ABS light came on then died., lights haven't really gone dim though?

Would that cause the battery to flat? :-S The battery light is dim sometimes, then sort of goes again when revved, looks like my trusty Multimeter has to come out tomorrow :(

The red light shows that the reg pack has gone on the alternator, one of the + diodes. The slip rings may have worn and a brush losing contact, still change the reg pack.
If it was not for the fact the the red light was on,I would have said OVP relay.

Had multimeter on today, 12V on battery when cold, so battery is fine. Started, saw 13V then stayed on a steady 14V, put heater on, lights etc, stayed at 14v, then 11V, then 12V, then 13V, it feels intermitent??? it will stay on 14V for awhile then suddenly go down to 11 then back up to 14, then towards the end, it suddenly surged up to 16V !! :-S i immediately stopped the car and havnt started since.

It would appear that the slip rings, that is the 3 copper rings that make contact with the carbon brushes are worn but equally it could be the brushes just worn down. The reg pack at £18 from any Bosch agent could well solve it.

Okie dokie, been down to my local electrical agent (not a specific bosch agent) got a new reg pack for 9.72, which i thought wasn't bad :) Will have a go at fitting it this afternoon when the engine has cooled down.

Yikes!

Well well, no wonder i was having problems !!!

sorry piccie is a bit blurry

Brushes were nearly down to the metal, black dirty, just awful.

Fitted the new one after giving the slip rings a clean, and voltage seems to be alot better now *fingers crossed*
