Will the battery in your alarm last 4 weeks?

It should do.

Think I will disconnect the battery, as it won't need the alarm because the car will be parked in a secure place.

A battery in good condition will easily withstand 4 weeks ..........if yours is known to be 'good', leave it connected.

Your car should be OK for that time, though many newer ones would not

As part of a professional investigation I have had two full auto chargers on trial for the past six months and can highly recommend them.

If you are leaving your car and have a mains source handy it’s definitely the way to go.

If the battery is in good condition there shouldn't be a problem, might be a good idea to make sure that the battery is fully charged before "laying-up" your car.

If you are unsure whether your battery will last, then as said above a good quality "battery conditioner" will maintain the voltage in the battery. I have used them many times before with no problems what-so-ever.

Just to clarify, you need a "battery conditioner" not a battery charger, a conditioner has a very low amperage charge rate and will turn on and off as required in order to maintain the voltage. A charger will have a higher charge rate and is not suitable for maintaining the battery when not in use.

Fully automatic battery chargers, battery conditioners and optimisers are basically one and the same thing, and what they are called largely depends who is selling them. The two I had on trial for the past six months were a CTEK xs3600 and a Ring Smart 8.

Both use Bulk-Accepter*-Float (BAF) techniques (*Sometimes referred to as Bulk-Absorption-Float.)

For a full description please visit their respective website.

If anyone is interested in an abbreviated report of my trials please advise and I will PM or post it.

I recently purchased the ctec 3600, I've used it and am very pleased with it. My merc never had its battery externally charged before and it took four nights (car disconnected and driven during the day) to bring the battery up to full condition.

On my van with a recently new battery two nights to full condition, in the case of the van the heater plug warning light goes out much quicker when the battery has been charged, and both vehicles seem to turn over much quicker when starting up.

I will be using it regularly as battery maintenance.

Cheers

:)

I have just typed CTEK xs3600 into Google and the prices vary from £40 to £60 although I did not conduct an extensive search or check eBay.

I left my 3 yr old 220 cdi for two periods of 8 weeks when it was 3 yrs old and it was ok.

One of the little solar panels from Halfords could be a soloution if the car is outdoors.
