there is a way but for mot it is best to use the garage beam setter.. but here goes..You need level ground.... mark a line 15 feet away from a wall or garage door. place the front of the vehicle..front bumper at the line, drive the car forward slowly and edge it gently against the wall or door, barely touching.. then switch on full headlamps.. now mark and X on the centre of the beam.. use tape or black marker.. now reverse car back to the line.. ..front bumper again.. and your full beam should still be centered on the X .......if not adjust accordingly...
The EU standard gives 10meters as the distance, the beam should fall by 110mm at 10m (1.1%), the beams should stay horizontaly on the same points.
The point to measure is where the cut off slope at the left and the horizontal cut off join.
Find a darkish corner with a wall to shine against on level ground, cover one headlight while you check the other.
Park at the wall and apply tape at the beam intersection, one horizontal along the cut off and one vertical at join of the flat and sloping part, move the car back 10m and check the drop, 110mm.
This method is the correct one, those boxes that they charge for using are only an approximation and require regular calibration to ensure accuracy, they are however much more convineint than a wall and clear space which you cant realy charge for.
