I have just replaced the alternator on my 87 300e. 160k miles. Now when I jump start the car, it runs then the lights start to go dim again. Question: even if the battery is bad, wouldnt/shouldnt the alternator keep everything bright until the battery charged? please help

Yes it should...

It could be that there is a problem with the altenator, ie loose connection etc.

I just had the alternator rebuilt in my ,87 300e. While hooking up the alternator I noticed that the only connection that I have is the 3 pronged one that goes to the back of the alternator. their is something else in back of the alternator that supposed to have something hooked into it. I dont have anything else to plug in besides that one thing. What am I missing maybe thats why my alternators keep blowing up is 'cause i'm missing a connection some where. sorry for the confusing post, i pray that someone can discern this mess and guide me. also the guy that rebuilt my alternator said its only 55amps, i always assumed that it was a 70 amp alternator.

Depending what else you have on, i.e. heated rear screen, blower, etc etc, The alternator will struggle at tickover engine speed. If you rev it up, the lights should brighten. However if that is the case, and you need to jump start all the time, the battery is toast. The alternator will try to charge something it cannot so will put a lot of effort into trying. You need a new battery :!:
On the alternator side, I had a 1984 280SE, don't know if the laternator is even remotely close to being the same, but inside the back was the voltage regulator. May not be the same of course, but that caused major problems for me, it shorted so the alternator was acting in reverse, taking power not giving.

I just realized when the shop rebuilt my alternator, they failed to
replace the voltage regulator, thats why it blew right away. Now I just need to figure out why my sunroof doesnt work. I've already checked the fuse. i dont get any sound when i hit the button

try rolling the fuses in the fusebox....

I had the same problem with mine, fuse seemed fine, but contact between fuse and clip was poor and dirty. Turn the fuse with the retaining end pressed so that the contacts grind the end of the fuse to improve the connection.

Took me ages to find the problem. worth a shot?
