My wife currently drives a C220 CDi - I'm just the lucky chap who has to fix it when she has problems with it.
After 3 years she has just started making noises about changing it for another Mercdes.
Now I realise this is probably a question with a lot of varying opinions from different people but is there any model which is more reliable than the others and are there any I should avoid like the plague?

You have posed a re hard question here :D if you run down one model, you will get shot by the owners here that have them:(

Perhaps it can be done in a virtuous way where the advantages are pointed out from one model over another.

Good point malcom! Maybe if people posted pros and cons with their particular model?

For example mine is reliable enough (mainly) but is renown on that particular year for rusting! No signs yet though I have to say.

W124 or S124 all the way. The last of the proper built Mercs, hewn from stone, engines that run for half a million miles when serviced correctly, brilliant ride, pretty quiet when cruising and there's a really decent range of engines (2.0, 2.3, 2.6, 2.8, 3.0, 3.2 Petrol, 2.5, 3.0 Turbo and non Turbo Diesels). Ranging from 20 to 40 MPG. 4x4 versions are available, 7 seats, 5 seats, Air Con and Climate Control are options, they're safe and reasonably cheap for the amount of car you can get.

Here's where you say you're looking for a NEW car. LOL...

*Hides under the table waiting for all of the C, S and SL class owners to gun him down*

I'd say it's not the model - its the year of manufacture. Post 04 cars are better than 1998-04 and pre 1998 are possibly better than present models - well less complex anyway. the closer you get to now from 04, the better the reliablility. e.g. Most of the C class facelift changes were reliability/quality related - same goes for the E class facelift.
