Best Oil

What do you guys recommend as the best oil for a W124 E280 1994

the oil we use is castrol magnatec 10w40 for engines

Magnatec is not the "best oil" as it's a semi-synthetic - more of a cost option.

A Fully synthetic 5w-40 would be the best quality option and preferably one meeting spec MB 229.5

Mineral oils these days are old-fashioned and obsolete IMO. Semi-synths I also think will gradually lose favour.

Most OEM's including MB now only recommend synthetic. MB 229.5 oils have to meet this spec for the extended drain periods.

The service manual for my E220 CDi recommends any oil that meets MB 229.3 spec so I tend to use a Fully Synthetic 5W40 quoted at this spec at 6000 mile intervals. I am not looking for extended mileage use, if you intend to keep the car for a while it seems like false economy to me.

What do you guys recommend as the best oil for a W124 E280 1994

I'm currently using Castrol RS fully synth 'power' 0W-40 and have been for the last 100k mls and the oil pressure is the same now as then - so wear appears minimal. I find it better than Mobil 1 as that finds anywhere to leak from!
