Hi, I have a 2013 e class coupe with 18 inch wheels, 35mm tyre height, suffer a little over road holes etc, very nervous about fitting 19 inch wheels & tyres, so anybody have any views on an 18 inch wheel with a 40mm high tyre?

Hello and welcome

Fit 17” or 16” wheels if you want comfort

The 35 and 40 isn’t a “mm“ height it is an aspect ratio - a percentage of the width. The bigger the number the larger the sidewall. Going away from standard affects the Speedo reading (under or over reading), also can invalidate insurance

In case it isn’t clear, a car wheel + tyre set for your car should always be a fixed diameter +/- a few %.
So if the wheels are smaller more of this total will be made up of tyre.
As the wheel is solid then only the tyre percentage can affect comfort as it is the only part that is able to absorb bumps hence smaller wheels with larger aspect tyres will be more comfortable, cost less and be less prone to pothole damage.

Biggest physics player here is overall wheel weight thus smaller wheels are lighter and give the best ride quality .

When I bought 18's for my coupe ,they came with 235 40 18. Tyres . They are reasonably more comfortable over pot holes than the 35 and 30 profile 19's . All 4 tyres/wheels are the same size . If your rears can hold a narrower tyre like a 235 then that's the way forward. Keep all 4 rims on the same profile tyre.

The sidewall difference is around 13% .
