Would I be mad to buy this car? and if driven carfully and only on motorway and not in traffic would I get 400 miles to a full tank of petrol.

Also do mercedes servicing get more expensive the bigger one you own?

oh yes and its £6995 (before negotiation)

Th E240 will do about 33-35 on a gentle run, so yes you'll get 400 miles from a tank, but the light will have been on for a while by then. I know, I've done it many times.
Round town, expect around 250 miles to a tank - and the tank is 13 gallons.
Servicing isn't that bad. You'll be up for a gearbox oil change and a new set of plugs shortly which will add £400 to the bill, but tread carefully and use an indie for any extra work and it shouldn't be too bad. Keep up the MBSH and they'll sort out any rust, which on a 2000 E is a given. Oh - and budget for a set of plug leads, mine never lasted more than 3 years before the lumpy idle returned.

Dealer servicing is around £240 for an A and £400 for a B service, plus extras if you say yes (don't - book it into the indie instead).

The 240 is the worst compromise with the performance of the 200 and the economy and depreciation of the 320! But, you forgive it the moment you hear that distant V6 purr. This car is all about comfort.

Price wise, it doesn't look too bad. I traded mine in (2000W 70k) just over a year ago. I got £7k for it and found it on a trader's web site for £9k a few months later. Do shop around though - they don't fly out that quick as everyone wants the 320cdi.

Jberks just about sums it up, but I would try a 210 diesel CDi before you buy thats where the 210 really excels.

I actually made a mistake its going for £6500 before negotiation, and this is at a decent second hand car dealers.

If the car is in Hove, whip it round to Alan Robertson for a once-over before you buy it. He's in the mews beside the Tin Drum
