Hi Les, I would forget it if I was you. Quite apart from the fact it was an Irish telephone number the way the technical description came over it is obvious that a third world country is the originator of the system. I don't doubt it is technically feasable but some basics about using ethanol in petrol engines include the fact you should use 'viton' rubber for seals instead of the normal 'butyl' rubber( the alcohol attacks butyl), calorific heat value is 30% lower so you're using more fuel, and ethanol systems don't like vented fuel tanks. Petrol engines, any water goes to bottom of fuel tank. Ethanol absorbs water and that doesn't burn very well. Hence the limited percentage fuel companies put into their 'fancy' wonderfuels!. If you're worried about fuel consumption you're running the wrong car.

www.greenfuels.com sell conversion kits, there is a lot of speculation as to the effect on different engine components with bio, plus as far as i know there are only 2 fuel stations that sell it in the uk, one in devon and one in norfolk, at least there were in november when i last checked, id leave it alone for a few years before investing any money in it

A friend runs his renault espace on bio diesel but he picked it up for pittence and it was almost like an experiment?
he's changed all the filters 2 or 3 times so far as apparently it acts like a cleaner?
doing alright so far but there is no way at the moment i would wont to put it in any of my cars!!! The principle behind it is fantastic but im still not convinced.
there were too many factors about the type of mixes and the out side temps making it congeal in the tank.

Nope Not for me!! i'll wait till they have profected it a bit more!!

This site claims that its distributor for the W123 allows E85 (ie 85% bioethanol) to be used. And this one claims bioethanol is "not in itself very corrosive"... hmm... there are a few filling stations around now (Morrisons claims to be installing E85 pumps in all its filling stations - anybody think it's worth a try?

I doubt the kit will work...

Hi all,

Would this system (http://www.go-on-green.com/) work with a 1984 500SEC?

If not, what would need to be done to safely (i.e., no damage to car) run on bioethanol?

Thanks,

Les

Hi Les,
I would recommend it maybe for your later HFM Injection system like your 220 but I doubt it will work on the 500 engine, simply because you have just the standart Injectors without any sensor or switch on it like shown on the picture.
Even all KE Jetronic cars like the 230,260 and 300 (From 85-92) will not work with this. But with the KE models there is a chance to setup the fuel quality on the ingnition. May this is a chance to fiddle with. There is a Morrisons near the place I'm working and I will try it the other day by mixing 50% normal fuel with 50% E85. I think that is a good start.

Alltogether the Mercedes Diesel Engines up to 1995 are better with Biofuls. You can easily mix it up with Salatoil up to 80% just with a small technical introdution ....

Bye,
Oliver
