Doesn't sound odd, a lot of sellers on ebay want a part exchange as they don't want the hassle of buying anything else. Sounds less risky than taking a wad of cash...if you wanted to beat someone up or attack them there seem plenty of easier ways to arrange it!

Just check the car as any second hand purchase. It's a cheap car and could be bad but that's why you get a mercedes convertible for £1k

I will of course, do all the normal second hand checks, you never know what I could find, but he has been forthcoming with all the faults of the car.

The seller is happy to do a straight swap and will meet me half way, as I am in london, and he is bordering scotland.

...am I likely to be mobbed by northers and beaten, or could it be ok? :D

Half way between London and Cumbria would be the West Midlands. I'd definitely be wary of being beaten by Brummies.

I think it looks suburb :) I would go for it.
Especially these last few days you would just die for a cabrio - well I would.
As long as it runs ok any niggles can be sorted. I know a breakers where they often have these.
Paint work looks well polished so been looked after and loved. And a few niggles to make it seem genuine.
Are you leaving you car puter in yours when you trade?

Why is it on twice? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MERCEDES-...8230366?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item43bd45165e

.......and check out his feedback as a seller. http://feedback.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&userid=fast_ford666&ftab=FeedbackAsSeller

I suggest he is not a private seller but an amateur trader. Not that there is anything wrong per se...just be careful

Thanks, yeah it doesnt pose a major issue for me, his feedback is good and everything to go by seems ok. I will be taking the heavys with me just in case heh.

Exactly my thoughts, enough foibles to seem genuine.

The only problem I have is that I make the journy and he changes his mind.

The carputer is in my E55, I will be trading the E320 cdi for this :)

If he won't tax it, make sure you remove the tax from your screen before you hand the car over!

Aha! yes I forgot to mention, mine expired end of next month, so not that bothered on that front.

As he doesnt want to tax it, but has send me the MOT and V5 documents as I asked via email, that we will meet him early, then drive straight to a local post office to tax it.

You would need to show insurance certificate to tax it.

I reckon you will be fine, can see why someone would want offload a car that needs work doing, for a more driveable/sellable model..so if you are happy go for it

Are you "buying" it on E-bay and then selling him yours for the same price?

In some respects that could be safer (ie you have the protection of E-bay plus the opportunity to leave feedback) however there may be a potential risk this way if he rejects your car and there is a one-way commitment for you to buy his.

Also does he have both sets of keys? I wouldn't want the risk of the car going walkies a few days after you've bought it..

As previously suggested the fact that he won't tax it probably means that he's not insured for it.

I would consider these points against how much you think the deal is saving you on a traditional sell yours and buy a new one arrangement (factoring in the cost of new tax and a tank of fuel to get there and back).

I'd just be a little worried that it seems to be a little underpowered for a convertible:

'it is a 2.3cc engine with a 6speed manual box.'

Apart from that all looks OK and if a swap suits both of you then why not.
