My car is in for its remap today. My insurance has gone up by £38 + a £26 admin fee for the change. No issue with that.

I then asked speculatively what an air filter upgrade would add to my insurance and they quoted an additional £40...

So...£38 for a 77bhp remap and £40 for a K & N filter??? What sort of mad world is this?

Tbh on a 2009 211 I would be v tempted self insure my own car.
As long as 3rd parties get the benefit come a claim I would just have to suck up personal losses, if they investigated to that degree anyway.

I want it to be a keeper, though, so scrimping on the insurance could cost me a serious, serious wad. I'll get a better quotation when I have to renew next year ...

That's because the muppets who fit K&N filters are more likely to be involved in an accident or insurance claim... (They're generally fitted by the burger king carpark "race" teams...) they do sweet FA for power

If they are silly to buy a K&No then they are silly enough to pay the hike .

Only if your 211 is worth serious money. But I respect your view.
I paid £6K for it but that's because it's in mint condition with 12mths MOT, free AA assistance and free 12mths warranty. That's probably way over book but it's the best car I've ever owned...

The admin fee annoys me... I remember back in the day when I used a small broker where any changes were made dropping in to see them and never a charge for changes despite sometimes having four or five alterations a year.

The air filter charge I totally understand.

We have gone Admiral multicar, so £900 for 4 cars, all fully comp, including an ancient SL55. The premium actually went down this year.

A friend of mine daughter had a Peugeot 107, the tyres were the originals, Conti, but well past their sell by date.
She went to a tyre fitter and had four new tyres fitted, don't know the make but budgets.
About 2 months down the road, a driver hit her from behind, the insurance assessor for the other drivers insurance company tried very hard to say that as they were not the same branded original tyres , then the insurance company had the right to refuse the claim.
Needless to say, some sharp words followed, and the vehicle was repaired by the insurance company.

Now that is daft !!!!!!!

Insurance companies are great when you're handing them money... they can be an absolute nightmare and extremely stressful to deal with when you need them to do the right thing

Why would you fit a K&N anyway?
Total waste of money.
Yes, I've come to that conclusion in the past. Anyone got any suggestions for filters that would just help my re-mapped motor breathe more freely? Or just leave it as stock?

Stock.
Contrary to all the BS marketing snake oil you get sod all improvement from air filters and often make it worse.
