black/blue smoke

I have a E320CDI on a 1999 with 130k miles everytime i take off or kick down i get a lot of black & blue smoke i know you get a puff now & then when it chokes it self but this happens all the time i have changed oil & fuel filter 3months ago i put 10w/40 semi-sythenetic oil.has anyone got any ideas?

Blue smoke would point to oil burning, how much oil does the car use, black smoke is fuel burning, first thing to check is the air filter..worth replacing always..next check all pipes to the air filter are clear and properly located, the intake can dislodge and fall down blocking the air to the filter...as you are using the 10-40 semi syn oil a good engine shouldnt burn it ..some engines will burn the lighter fully synthetic..try changing to a differnt brand of oil.. other things to check EGR valve, and injectors

mine does the same, excuse my ignorance, but is the egr valve above the exhaust manifold?

For what it's worth, I had similar.

My basic advice though is to make sure you are absolutely clear what colour the smoke is. I had two different problems and didn't realise that I had actually fixed one and that the smoke had then changed colour as a result of the second.
