Hi, any ideas on who could sort out the faded stripe shaped area of the back windscreen panel of my car? I thought it was a dirty mark but it's actually some coating or paint that has worn off, I'm not sure. I only recently bought the car and unfortunately hadn't spotted it at the time. Can it be repaired and what kind of specialist would do it? Ideas of cost would help too. I've attached a photo

Hello and wellcome

It’s quite common unfortunately - you can wrap it or get it sprayed

You can also replace them, but it's a job that often only gets done if the rear screen needs replacing, as it's apparently quite easy to break the securing catches when removing the old ones. I had mine re-sprayed at a local very good body shop, cost £316!

Expensive! Was that without removal of the rear screen?

Yes. I looked at YouTube videos of removing the black bits and didn't fancy it, so went to a bodyshop I've used before who do very good work and let them repsray them.

If you follow the instructions, they are easy. A bit or two can come off, but they are easily replaced by sealant underneath the panel. Mine cost me about £50 to get both panels repainted

As said, a good Wrapping company, would sort that, no problem, that seams the easiest/cheapest solution, or possibly, buy a piece of 3m Wrap (eBay about a tenner) and have a go yourself, it's got nice sharp, clean edges you can cut along. :)
Oh, and Welcome. :)

The bit in the middle - I dont have an SLK but is that actually metal, plastic or glass?

It feels very much like glass, similar to the windscreen, but it's hard to tell. The paint, if it is paint, looks like a coating of some sort where the edges have worn.

Easy items to replace if you follow instructions and take your time. They are thin black plastic and it's the clear coat that degrades. I paid £45 each for SL ones. but they seem to have doubled in price and are now apparently scarce at MB dealers. I'd be replacing. I think it's radiated heat from the edge of the rear screen that causes the failure of the clear coat.

Great, thanks. Although I wouldn't be replacing them myself. Is this something a bodyshop can do?

Well I did some research and got a couple of quotes from body shops for £200 to either paint the existing trims with high gloss paint or replace them for new ones. I've gone for another specialist who can wrap both for £100 in total which I've been told is alot longer lasting so will go for that.

Now all I need to do next is work out why my lights are staying on when I remove my key from the ignition and lock my car. They're in Auto setting so not sure if this is normal. I've never driven a merc (just boight this car) before but perhaps this should be a separate post...

Do they eventually go out, if so they will be set so when you arrive at your destination during the darkness it leads the way to your door or safe place without endangering ones self in the dark. :) If they stay on then you may have a problem, relay or the light switch malfunction?

Oh I see, so they're meant to stay on. I never got that far as it was the first time that I drove it in the dark so when I got out and realised, I just kept locking, unlocking and putting the ignition key back in to see if that made a difference . I thought it did as they eventually turned off but that was obviously to do with a timer setting. They were on for at least 45 seconds I think... front and back lights. Is that about right?

I'm used to having previously driven older cars that don't have this feature, so good to know...

You can also turn this feature off if you are uncomfortable with it.... If you have the manual, have a read, there are some real gems in there....
