Has the block exemption thing taken effect in relation to servicing and it's effect on warranty work? Is it possible to have servicing carried out by an independant without voiding your warranty.......

I know Land Rover are happy for their products to be serviced by any Vat registered garage. Obviously genuine parts need to be used and receipts retained.

I am only asking 'cos I just got stung £170 on an A service ((£60 for 7 litres of oil!) on a 1999 E300td saloon (37000 miles)

Andy, I shall come and see you when the B service is due!

Another thing, my service book tells me that the service interval between an A and B service is fixed at 22,000 Km.......why then does my service indicator, which has just been reset at the service, show 10000 miles to the next service......what's happened to the other 2000 odd miles?

Oh, and one last thing........when I took the car in, they said they had to do a software upgrade.......anybody know what this might have affected, the very nice lady who took my keys off me and gave them back didn't have a clue but I have to say the gearbox seems somewhat smoother and throttle response on small throttle openings seems to have improved also. Could it be that the throttle map has been changed?

Thanks all.......

Where does it say this lacy. Are you sure this is not the maximuim. I have a 99 service book that (I think) is for W210 diesels as well. What page is this on. The assyst service system is variable. It measures the quality of oil etc. on an ongoing basis. It is also based on time (time limited).

PS: £170 for an 'A' service does not sound expensive including parts.

£170 is very good for MB stealer service.

1st Service on SLK due around 7000miles time. £350!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!hahaha wont be going to local stealer. too humourous are the prices even for my sense of humour. shall look around at other MB dealers and get the best price even if it means traveling. £50 of fuel would take me 500 miles so thats a big catchemnt area. plus i have 12 MB dealers within 20miles.

The warranty is not voided if you do as you describe - I am assuming you are not referring to the 1999 car as there is no warranty except the corrosion one, and this is not covered by the block exemption rules. So, you lose corrosion warranty and mobilio if you go outside the dealers but not the 3 year car warranty.

Yes, it was the corrosion warranty I was refering to. Fortunatly, there is no corrosion on my car at the moment besides a very light 10mm staining deep under the front door seal on the drivers door but given all the horror stories of W210 corrosion, I was loath to lose the MB history in case of problems

To quote my service book page 6:

'Here, either a "minor' service (=A) or a 'major' service (=B) is performed.
The threshold between an "ASSYST" service A and service B is fixed at a mileage of 22,000 km.'

Yes you will lose the corrosion warranty so you need to compare the cost of the servicing against any corrosion repair. At the last service I had the dealer perform a full corrosion check. The serious stuff such as cross member and wings are all fine and they did the boot lock last year. That was in November and I am still waiting for approval on the work. I would get a claim in for your's asap and it may be worse by the time it goes in.

Some 210s are worse than others. I am very picky and as I pay for dealer servicing they can damn well keep up to it, but if I was paying there is only one bit covered by the warranty that I would actually pay to fix and thats some bubbling on the driver's sill. Other than that it's just a few traces of early problems under the door seals - can't actually see any rusty metal, just some slight staining to the seals. To be truthful, nothing that a few mins with the jenolite and a dot of touch up wouldn't cure. I intend to waxoyl the doors once its been repaired. I have a bubble on the bottom of the door and another on the front wing but they are clearly stone chip related so they are down to me anyway. I will probably let them do those when the do the other work.

Perhaps have it cleaned up under warranty and then move to a specialist.
