Hello all. I've been having a hard time with this 1973 280C. One of the items bothering me most is in regard to the fan switch.

On this car, when I turn the "colder" switch to an on position, the idle increases (I assume because it's connected to the AC?), but the fan will turn on and blow air (The AC Compressor is NOT installed on this vehicle), but if I turn just the fan control switch, nothing. Is this the normal operation? Do I always have to turn the "colder" switch along with the fan control and, when it's installed, switch on the AC compressor?

Winter's coming, I need heat! I think the heater core might need to be flushed as well, but I wanted to check about the fan operation first.

Thanks!

Hi,

Is a model without A/C? (the centre consule sticks out at the top)

If so, are you sure you aren't getting the 'fresh air' vent confused with the fan? If the car is moving/the fan is on, the middle vent will only allow cool fresh air, with the option to close the vent.

It is the side, foot and widscreen vents that allow warm air.
You should get natrual heat from the engine through these side, foot etc vents regardless of fan activity. If not you may have a heater matrix/circulation problem. a simple flush might cure the ills.

If you do get heat through those side vets etc, it sounds to me like your fan motor or switch/fuse needs attention.

Hope this is of help?

Regards

FS

it sounds like the car originally had Air Con... and has now been removed. The fan switch should control the fan, irrespective of the air con being on or off.

I sincerely hope that the fan itself is OK - replacing it takes two days..
