My 143,000 mile car has developed a strange fault. Driving this morning with fan setting 1 (no climate control) the fan speed went up to around setting 3. No matter that I had not touched it. The EC was on, so the red light was on. Turning the fan control to 6 o'clock should turn the fan off, the red light off and the system. Now the fan stays on, plus the red light, plus the system. Its as if the minimum setting is now 3, because it is possible to increase the fan speed beyond the new minimum, but no increase occurs until I have turned the fan switch to 3.5.
Any ideas, has anyone had this problem before?

It's either what Scotty says, or there is some regulator that controls the speed of these fans that packs in. Do a search on forum as I've read about others with same problem.

Potentially yes Mark. I'm not an expert on your car so don't know where the thing that controls your fan is situated. Someone else will know though.

On the W210 it's located in the fan housing behind the glovebox. Just remove the passenger under dash tray and locate the rectangular 3 wire plug. remove the plug, remove the plastic panel (8 screws or so) and access the regulator. It took me 20 mins to replace mine on my 2000 E240 (and I'm not a mechanic).
Not sure where it is located on the slk though.
