today my turbo decided to throw in the towel, it all happened quite fast, was a bit whistle & whine and a loss of power even though it was only doing 50mph at the time , followed by engine management light and some smoke , quickly stopped and have had car recovered to Mercedes, now comes the issue , the car is 39 months old ,full service history, (last 2 with an independent but used merc parts) 50,000 miles , so just out of warranty .. anyone know what the likelihood of MB giving a "goodwill" payment towards some or all of the repair with the car being just over 3yrs old & 50k on the odometer?... has anyone had these fail , its the 651 series engine which I thought was better than what was the Renault one fitted to some previously....

Could be a challenge as it’s been outside of the dealer network - That’s what I expect they’ll say to you.

It shouldn’t matter as long as it’s been serviced to manufacturers specification and it shouldn’t have failed so soon.

Thanks, I would feel disappointed if they use the independent as an excuse, the independent said any issues he was happy to back me up as he gets the service parts from the Mercedes garage the car is currently sat in awaiting their £168 diagnosis even though the independent garage has had a quick look and confirmed my fears .....I appreciate its out of warranty but 50,000 miles and failed is not what I expected when I bought my first Mercedes...depending on how this pans out it could also be my last ..

I'd just bite the bullet & put the £168 towards the new turbo. You pretty much already know what the fault is .... I'd not pay someone to tell me what I already know.

^ Normally I'd agree, but the OP is holding on to the slim chance MB may contribute towards a new turbo so the diagnosis is unavoidable.

I would agree that a 3 yr old 50k mile car should not be needing a new turbo despite correct maintainance under an indy using OEM parts. The main dealer has a get out clause to avoid paying anything once out of the network for servicing.
I'd hope they do the honourable thing and agree to contribute to the cost. However, if they do then they will insist on the work being done by themselves and the OP will incur dealer labour rates which negates their contribution. Win win for Mercedes.

look for reasons why it died…. is it very common? can be traced to a flaw when manufactured ? have they been repaired FOC in other countries regardless of warranty or mileage? if so did you pay any part of the purchase of the car using a credit card (deposit or payment)….

the last point just makes much easier to nail them using - the consumer rights act - which gives you SIX years to get it fixed entirely at their cost ….if its died because they made it wrong !!!

the law is very clearly on the side of the buyer.... BUT no dealer ,shop or manufacturer wants you to know this... John Lewis just said to my parents oh you paid on a credit card... well then that's it you are stuffed... which is a TOTAL LIE !!!! get it in writing they refuse to repair... then go to your credit card and raise a dispute…. credit card companies have massive power and make far to much money to get in a fight, they will pull the payment and return to you if the person you purchased from does not come back with good evidence your claim is wrong within a set timeframe.... (usually 30 days)

as most businesses know they are screwed they pay out... or you go to small claims which just went up to 10k and they don't usually bother to defend because they know they make them to die

I would have thought, if the independent has updated the DSB correctly, that that may be more likely to give at least some goodwill contribution.

And dealer price of turbo. When the turbo actuator was playing up on my R Class, an independent wanted £2000 to replace it using a dealer sourced turbo & actuator. I was quoted £600 for just a new turbo & actuator from a place that specialised in turbos

^ Yep, sometimes it pays to shop around and not rely on the dealer to supply and fit everything that goes wrong.

But its poor that a 3yr old turbo should fail.

It seems odd. We have a fair amount of luck getting customers goodwill from main dealer on diesel nox sensor issues, but none with petrol nox sensor faults.

I'm inclined to agree, there's quite a few reputable places now remanufacturing them to a high standard with a warranty. Even if Mercedes cough up 50% it's probably going to cost you more.

Sure is, get oil pressure tested ,manually and establish turbo oil feed (unlikely, but possible ) is not an issue

There must be a case "not fit for purpose " with benz nox sensors they seem to be made to dtf stds....

I was hoping someone in here knew if it was a common issue and if others had been fixed free, or with a contribution from MB .... if MB won't contribute I will indeed get it repaired elsewhere, the only reason its in Mercedes at the moment is to try and get a contribution from them , but unfortunately the diagnostic cost is the price I have to pay to get to the stage where I can begin to negotiate with them about a contribution...

The "diagnostic" cost is the thin edge of the wallet emptying wedge.
I'm sure if MB dealers could they'd charge diagnostics for a burst coolant hose...

They attempted to charge me £170 for diagnostics on a blown LED lamp under the mirror ... Part was £20 from them and fitted it myself ha

the mostly likely contribution from the manu, will be YOU pay for the coffee you're drinking as they explain how u should do one....

the world is moving towards, "it started when you left the show room - and anyway the new model came out the day after we sold you yours, if you aren't buying one of those can you get out of the car parking space as the queue is very long and you're holding us back"
