Struggled to give the agent (Halliwell Jones) money for 4 series folding top, not for me but family member, in the end walked away.

I know this isn't new but you do wonder why they are still making it so difficult.

I know £15,000 isn't a kings ransom these days for a car but surely the profit would pay someone's wages for the week?

No I don't get it either. It's a strange old world some used car dealers seem to occupy. Some will try and sell you junk and some seem to do everything they can to put you off buying and some won't sell if you're not financing. In any of those cases I've just gone elsewhere. Plenty of car dealers around who will sell you a good car at a realistic price without hassle.

When I was a Car Salesman back in the 60's and 70's all I wanted was happy customers that would come back to me when they wanted to change their car again. If I new that the car they were looking at was not of the standard they were looking for I used to steer them away and introduce them to one that I knew was good. Finance was a secondary thing and we as a Salesman didn't earn anything from Finance. We had to hand the customer over to the Business Manager to deal with the customer. The sale of a good car was our focus:)

We were hungry then and we wanted the sale, but we also wanted the return business and a person that has been sold a load of crap is not going to come back to you again

what ever happened to the saying the customer is always right.

I could be that the salesman knew there were other customers waiting in the wings and wanting to go the finance route. salesmen are sadly driven by targets and customer satisfaction comes lower. Shame really.

That’s the reason I completely failed at being a salesman, I wouldn’t do half the sales tactics and trick the others would pull on customers to get that sales, but when I did get business I got the big ones and their families and friends,

Well word of mouth on good customer service is clearly worth more than the one sale on a shoddy finance package which means a customer will never return let alone make a recommendation.
with regards to recommendations. I remember years ago garages would give you 200 pounds for recommending a customer who made a car purchase Happened with me when I got my Volvo 440 many moons ago. I went from being a Volvo guy to mercs.
Different models now

So many factors involved nowadays ie, how long the car has been on the forecourt, whether the customer wants a discount for cash, how well that particular model/price takes to sell, upselling extras and of course incentives for steering the car buyer towards finance.
You could have played the system and negotiated the best finance deal possible and then paid it off within the month as some do if you really wanted that car
