Anyway. To get back on topic. What BMW is suggesting here is no different than a television manufacturer charging you an annual subscription if you want to plug a Apple TV/Amazon Fire Stick etc into the HDMI port!
No. Except one typically doesn’t pay £45,000 for a telly. Well unless you’re Michael Elphick.

Wasn’t referring to a cost of the car/TV though :p

More that BMW are going to charge owners £80/yr for a service that they only pay the manufacturer of (Apple) once. It’s basically a mirroring function and once it’s in the car BMW have no further dealing with it. Any updates are carried out from the phone.

I’m that good looking that when I get naked in the bathroom, even the shower gets turned on!! ;) :p :D
No doubt the toilet ‘flushes’ and the taps ‘dribble’...
In the Apple shop, did you have your shoes on the wrong feet again?
I’m thinking the ladies there, had a strong mothering urge :p:D

Apparently Land Rover charge a monthly fee for the remote connection items (like remote start - fuel level check- etc etc) which others don’t charge for (like Volvo in my XC90...)

Moe likely as Apple are going to pay $38bn in tax to the US govt to bring money into the country they need to recoup some of that so looked at new forms of revenue and told BMW they will charge £40 a year so BMW instantly doubled it, blatent revenue generation

They haven’t as they would have to charge every manufacturer a fee. This would be big market news if they did and, considering the ever growing list of cars supporting it, would feature in their profit margins, it doesn’t.

Just as they don’t licence AirPlay to your TV from an iPhone they don’t licence CarPlay functionality.

The system is redundant without an iPhone. There is no OS in the car. It’s all on the phone. So BMW are charging £80/Yr to use your phone functions on the car infotainment screen.

Or to look at it another way - use your phone in your car.

No doubt they'll use your data allowance to renew your licence and take your money from your bank account.

Nice.....

To be honest I think this is a ploy by BMW to get people to buy the fancy incar infotainment system. As they realise if they don’t people will specify the £235 CarPlay prep and skip the BMW NAV.

If you specify a bog standard car, let’s say a 320i SE and then try to add Car Play only, you are told you must add a £900 media package!!!

There is no way to specify CarPlay without it.

They are all at it, if you want one thing you have to buy a "pack" which costs way more than you actually wanted to spend

As Carl says, this is basically a CON.

Heh, yet another modern "improvement" I certainly would never pay for.
