My car was parked between two "good" schools in Edinburgh yesterday and it appears that one of the fine pupils decided to take the badge off the bonnet. If I get another star are they easy to replace? I had a look today but can't figure out how to put a new one on.

Piece of cake Jez.
Open the bonnet...underneath the star its a sprung half twist and it will come out .
I have some good used stars if you want one but there are actually two sizes.. so measure first!

I also live close to a "good" school. Looks like this craze has reared its head again. :(

I have purchased a replacement Star for my 1995 C 180 but cannot fit it. The Star with the clip attached will not go down through the hole.

The round base is the same size as the indent on the bonnet and the clip is the same size as the one that came off.

Anyone any ideas what I might be doing wrong and what tool is the correct one to twist the clip?

I have zero idea of the attraction in the first place never mind why it should be revived. The VW one was also a mystery - but there again, so are most kids crazes.

Edit to say that, like the OP, I am also in Edinburgh. Perhaps it's a local thing at the moment.

Hi, do you have the old one off yet?

I also had mine "liberated" and after being quoted £95 +VAT to fit by a merc dealer done it myself. It is actually very very easy once you know how it works.

Hi. Yes, the old one is off. I think I have basically figured out how to do it but I cannot get the new one through the hole while the clip part is attached for some reason. I have measured it all and it's the right size.

If you look at the body of the badge holder you will see two little grooves where the clip is guided into place.(a bit like a lightbulb holder) If your unit won't fit then it will have the clip locked in the closed position. You need to twist the clip so that it is not spread then drop the whole unit through the bonnet hole like a keyway, then simply half twist the clip back into the locked position.

Another method would be to take off the bonnet release mech and framework then get to it directly, but that is the long way around.

Hope this makes things a bit easier,

Thanks, Chris. I gave up and went to my local dealership. Turns out I had been given one that was too big in an odd way - in what you have referred to as the body.

Do you happen to know if all C class use the same badge? eBay feedback yet to be left. ;)

It seems that those currently living in Edinburgh might wish to consider fitting a flat MB emblem and call it a day until the craze is over.

But whoever is doing this is not consistent. They did "Fred the Shred's" car windows, but left the badge alone?

As far as i was told by the guy at my local Europarts, if it is the older type badge that fits on the radiator grille it will not have the words mercedes benz written in a blue crest around it, otherwise all bonnet mounted stars with MB written on are the same size and type.

All the best,

nice 201 2.5D 1993 & very nice 129 SL500 1994
Mine has a hole where the last three (in one year) were once fitted, so central lancs can also be added the at risk list.

I think it is more about the fact that the star sticks up and these nice well educated young people feel it a duty to pull off anything that is able to be pulled off.
I think the answer is in educatio......sorry electrocution !!

All the best,

I have zero idea of the attraction in the first place never mind why it should be revived. The VW one was also a mystery - but there again, so are most kids crazes.

A group called "the beastie boys" brought out a single in 1986 called "fight for your right(to party) and in the video one had a large chain around his neck with a large VW badge on the end of it.
that was the begining of the nightmare for all vw owners as the craze for vw badges began, to be followed by the collection of any others that took the fancy of the a-holes that collected them...
