This switch is just sitting there on the left-hand side of the engine bay, behind the fake firewall near the battery. It has two wires attached to it but it isn't physically mounted anywhere. I'm suspecting it was part of an alarm system that's since been removed - there's a clue in the form of a small socket on the dash with a handful of pins but which doesn't do anything.

Might there be another reason for its existence?

I suspect you are correct, certainly not original fitment wiring with the Pearly Wotnot terminals crimped on. The bracket does look well made though.

Can't help wondering where those wires go....

Yes... But since there's no control unit any more, and the wires disappear into a loom. I'm just curious: they clearly aren't attached to anything that matters.

I would chop the connectors off the cables then tape them up separately. Cant do any damage then.

I would find out where they go to and see if any factory seals have been disturbed letting water in.
I would also follow the two hefty black wires with the blue ring terminal earthed on the strut turret and see where they go and remove the ring terminals from the positive junction box that are snipped off.

Interestingly, I've just stumbled across this image, from the online maintenance manual from the w124performance.com site. Seems to show the switch in situ, suggesting it's an original part - even if the wiring isn't. The page in question is 54-1255, and refers to the location of fuse boxes.

I don't doubt it - still wonder why it's in an official MB publication, though maybe it's a US thing.
