Hi All

Searched up on the above & there are few threads about this....just wanted to throw in my experience of this issue

Have an E63 AMG W212...A few weeks ago when reversing out of my drive, got a bonnet open warning...checked it was definitely closed, but still kept on getting the warning

Tried 'caking' the latches with the magical WD40 (as some member have tried successfully), but this didn't do the trick

Took it to my Indy who said just replace the latches..problem solved.

Don't know about the rest of you but these small latches had an effect on 4 operations of the car!!

For one the wipers didn't work when stationery...nor the washers (they do eventually work when you get going, but a rain covered windscreen in the winter is no fun when trying to get out of your street)...plus the Hill Hold function does not work, nor does the Stop start!!

It's strange that such a small component has an effect on so many functions of the car

Did anyone else have these issues when their bonnet open warning light came on?

I know the system is designed to stop wipers working when the bonnet is open to stop them fouling on the open bonnet, perhaps washers is the same but I can’t think why the others functions are affected!

It's odd...As soon as the guy replaced both latches (said just do both as they were only £10 each) everything started working again!

Possible the car thinking the bonnet is open would damage these functions...on't know...at a loss on this one

At least all is well & ticking over nicely...just can't see why 2 (probably 1) faulty latch would affect so many functions!!

bizarre

I've had that warning a couple of times, up to now, slamming the bonnet shut has cured it.

I know the system is designed to stop wipers working ..............

Probably not all models - I know it doesn't on my car......I think it is for safety and not to prevent the wipers working.

It all stems from the presafe functions and pedestrian safety I believe (Your car has the function to pop up the bonnet slightly when it detects impact so as to minimise the impact angle and 'lessen' the injuries to the pedestrian)

Or catapult them over the windscreen and out of harms way :D

Yes. It pops the end nearest the windscreen. Does not stop the wipers moving when it is open (made the mistake of trying to move the wipers with the bonnet open).

Bonnet open on the 212 does stop the wipers from working, but on the wife’s 169 it stops the wipers but not the nozzles from working, seems it’s very model dependant
