Hi all, my old CLK in osbidian black is in good condition all over except the bonnet that is rough to the touch where the lacquer is patchy, it has slowly been getting worse over the past two years. I supect that at sometime in it's life it was resrayed for some reason and poor quality lacqer was used, it looked very good when I bought in in 2015. This may be my last car and I intend to keep it as long as it runs ok and I spend on safety, the bonnet is only cosmetic but I wondered how much it would cost for a respray.
I live in Newcastle on Tyne and know there is a big variation in prices over the UK.

Could you get away with just a re-lacquer rather than a re-paint ?

the paint in the patches looks dark grey not black but no rust, sure that it would need paint and lacquer.

I had to have the bonnet and roof of my S204 resprayed for a very similar reason about a year ago, cost was £600, roof is bigger than bonnet so bonnet was no more than £300 - small but very well respected bodyshop in Ashford Kent.

The paint would look faded with poor condition Lacquer. Somebody I know had her faded Red BMW 3 series re-lacquered and it came up looking sharp again, you would never have known it had looked faded :)

Thanks, I suppose it may be easier as you can remove the bonnet so no masking needed

do you have garage,? geordie! if so, put it in out of the way of the draft, wash the bonnet- dry off; a sheet of wet and dry 2,000 grit gently sand the surface, to your satisfaction ,a soft cloth with thinners wipe off the bonnet; make sure it is clean then make sure you have not damaged the paint. So shake the can of lacquer for at least two mins then spray the bonnet from 8 to 9 inches try to float it on; 2 or 3 coats should do the job. It could be a days work, i hope this is of some use

My local paintshop charge around £300 per panel.

Id say around 400 for a good body shop.

Have a google search for body shops in the area and read the reviews. Visit a few to get a feeling of quality, service and price and take it from there.

visit a body shop, see if they can do paint correction on the bonnet or not (flat clear coat and re polish.
They will tell you if it has to be re painted and how much it would cost, then its up to you.

Would it be worth looking on ebay / scrap yards for another bonnet - might be cheaper than the respray?

I think the problem there might be if the paint is from a different batch it would show. Better if the paint was mixed to match the existing colour ?
