I have a CLK, X reg, and the other day when checking the engine oil, the bonnet release lever worked fine, though abit stiff; this is usual though. The toggle presented itself as normal thru the grill and all was well.

Several people started flashing their headlights at me, so I thought the bonnet was not down properly; it seemed ok. I then thought i would open it up again to check.

Well, as I pulled the lever, it was stiff as usual, then I heard a cracking noise - and now the lever does not do anything. I guess I have snapped the plastic fitting and / or cable - the bonnet is down properly - how do I get the bonnet opened again properly via the lever.

I cannot see any solution, and I'm hoping one of you guys can help.

Many thanks,

The car has to go up on a ramp, where the bonnet can be opened from under the car. The bonnet levers are held in place by one screw in the center, and a locating peg to stop it from turning, when you pull it. If the end has broken off the handle,it can be replaced, the wire just hooks in.

Malcolm, thanks for that; what happens if the actual cable has snapped and needs to be replaced, is it a job requiring panels to be removed etc. - ie a big job. I'm away in ireland, but fortunately there is a merc dealer in town, but planning to get local garage to do it, if that does invalidate anything.

Cheers

I do not think that the cable has snapped, just the handle,no one would know that this has been repaired, and will not invalidate anything.

I would agree with Malcolm that it would probably be the handle and not the cable.
Plastic does tend to go brittle with age.
